- Jack Johnson was the
- first African-American to
- win the world heavyweight
- boxing championship. He
- defeated the champion,
- Tommy Burns, in Australia, in 1908. Many
- white racists disliked the fact that Jack had
- won the championship. Former heavyweight
- champion James Jeffries, who was white,
- came out of retirement just to fight Jack in
- 1910. But James couldnΓÇÖt match JackΓÇÖs
- strong right-hand uppercut and lost. For that
- fight, Jack received $120,000, the largest
- amount of money paid to a boxer at the time.
