  5.                                  defeated the champion, 
  6. Tommy Burns, in Australia, in 1908. Many 
  7. white racists disliked the fact that Jack had 
  8. won the championship. Former heavyweight 
  9. champion James Jeffries, who was white, 
  10. came out of retirement just to fight Jack in 
  11. 1910. But James couldnΓÇÖt match JackΓÇÖs
  12. strong right-hand uppercut and lost. For that
  13. fight, Jack received $120,000, the largest
  14. amount of money paid to a boxer at the time.

  16. In the first half of this century, there were 
  17. several laws in the United States that
  18. denied black people many of the rights
  19. that white people enjoyed. In 1913,
